FAQs a Dietitian Answers

Families and residents of Assisted Living Facility and Nursing Homes have many questions related to diet, nutrition, allergies, and other conditions. Here are a few examples of questions our team of Dietitians, Certified Dietary Managers, and Certified ServSafe Managers answers regularly.

  • For each specific medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease, or kidney issues we create a specific diet such as low-sodium, diabetic friendly, renal, or texture modified diets to meet medical needs.

  • Weight monitoring, hydration programs, nutrient dense meals options and assistance with dining are a few examples of how to prevent malnutrition and dehydration.

  • For residents that follow specific dietary practices (e.g. Kosher, halal, or vegetarian) the dietitian will provide alternative menu options and source specific ingredients.

  • Dementia can affect eating habits. Dietitians can provide a simplified menu with familiar foods, finger foods, or visual cues to encourage eating.

  • Our dietitians can conduct nutritional assessments, track weight changes, review lab results and make adjustments to care plans in collaboration with healthcare providers.

  • We work with speech-language pathologists to determine the correct food texture and liquid consistency for residents with dysphagia. We recommend modified diets such as pureed or soft foods and thickened liquids. We ensure the diet is nutritionally adequate.

  • Our Dietitians maintain detailed records of residents’ allergies and ensure clear communication with kitchen staff. In addition we review menus and recipes to eliminate allergens and implement protocols to prevent cross-contact during food preparation.
